Gastroscopic balloon removal

Gastric balloons are designed to remain in the stomach between 6 months and 1 year. If the removal of the gastric balloon is delayed, the probability of an increase in the complication rate is very high. During this procedure using endoscopic equipment, the saline solution in the gastric balloon will be extracted first, and then the deflated gastric balloon will be removed.

  • Hospitalisation is not needed.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to remove a gastricballoon?

Using endoscopic equipment, your gastroenterologist will extract the saline solution from the gastric balloon and then remove the deflated gastric balloon through your mouth. The entire procedure generally takes less than 30 minutes.

How is the Orbera balloon removed?

After you have been given a sedative medication, ORBERA™ will be placed and removed by your doctor using an endoscope that goes down your throat and into your stomach.

What happens if a gastric balloon ruptures?

The balloon displaces stomach volume which produces a sense of early satiety when eating. Severe adverse complications include gastric perforation (more likely in those with previous upper GI surgeries), gastric obstruction, gastric ulcer, esophagitis, and esophageal perforation.

Can a gastric balloon burst?

We are regularly asked whether the balloon can burst and although we have to make you aware that this is a possibility, the risk is very small.
